Hello Human Being,
Some of the most important negotiations I’ve been part of didn’t turn on numbers, terms, or contracts. They turned on a moment of connection often before the meeting even began.
Not because people were drinking. And not because anyone relaxed their standards.
But because the conversation had already moved beyond the deal.
That’s why many major agreements around the world are shaped over a dinner, on a golf course, or in some cultures through shared experiences where business is never formally discussed, but trust is. In China, for example, relationships are often built first, long before a contract is ever mentioned. In a KTV (long nights at a karaoke places).
In the United States, the dynamic is often different. Business is usually handled directly in the meeting room. Once the deal is agreed, then comes the dinner or the golf game to strengthen a relationship that has already been defined.
Neither approach is right or wrong. They simply reflect different ways cultures separate or blend, business and personal space.
Wine, like food, travel, or conversations about family, is just one tool to step outside the transaction and understand the person across the table.
Because contracts don’t create trust.People do.
Where have you seen trust form outside the deal itself?
